As the holiday season approaches along Florida’s Gulf Coast, homes in the Panama City area begin to sparkle with lights, inflatables, and festive displays. At Ridge Heating & Air Conditioning, we love seeing our neighbors deck the halls, but with more decorations comes more demands on your home’s electrical system.
Let’s make sure your home stays merry and safe!
Inspect Before You Plug In
Before you hang a single strand of lights, take a good look at each plug, cord, and bulb. Florida’s high humidity and salty air can cause quicker wear and tear, especially in coastal areas like ours.
What to inspect:
- Cracked, frayed, or exposed wires
- Loose or corroded connections
- Burnt-out bulbs or missing fuses
- Signs of water damage or mold where cords have been stored
If you spot any issues, replace the lights instead of attempting a patch. Faulty holiday lighting is a common cause of electrical fires.
Use the Right Lights: Indoor vs. Outdoor
Not all lights are created equal! Indoor-rated strands aren’t made for outdoor exposure to humidity, rain, or sprinkler spray; conditions common in our area.
Make sure you choose lights that are UL®-listed or ETL®-certified (look for the seal on the packaging).
Key guidelines:
- Outdoor lights = weather-resistant with the appropriate rating
- Indoor lights = only for dry, protected interiors
- LED lights = cooler to the touch, more energy-efficient, safer for longer use
In our region’s warm climate, LEDs are especially smart: less heat means less stress on your wiring and less risk of overheating.
Avoid Overloading a Circuit
It’s tempting to plug all your decor into one outlet — string lights, power-inflatables, smart projectors — but that can lead to tripped breakers or even worse, fire hazards. Spread out your load across multiple outlets.
Here’s a simple rule of thumb: never use more than 80% of a circuit’s capacity. So, if a circuit is rated for 15 amps, don’t draw more than about 12 amps’ worth of devices.
Consider also using surge-protected power strips, which help guard against frequent storms and power fluctuations.
Use Proper Cords and Grounded Outlets
When you’re stringing lights across your yard or around your palm trees, make sure to use extension cords that are rated for outdoor use. Indoor extension cords simply won’t hold up in our climate.
Plug them into GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) outlets, especially outdoors, because GFCIs will shut off power instantly if a short or moisture is detected.
And remember:
- Don’t run cords under rugs, doorways, or across sharp edges
- Keep cords away from high-traffic areas to avoid tripping
- Secure cords with clips (not staples) and keep them off the ground if possible
Set a Timer or Turn Off Before Bed
Even LED decorations can malfunction if left unattended. A smart plug or timer is a great investment; it can automatically shut off your display during sleeping hours or when you’re away.
It saves electricity, extends the life of your lights, and gives you peace of mind.
Know the Warning Signs
Watch out for signs that something is wrong with your electrical:
- Flickering lights or outlets
- Outlets or plugs that feel warm to the touch
- A faint burnt smell in your rooms
- Breakers that trip frequently
In our humid area, wiring can deteriorate faster than you might expect. If you notice any of these indicators, unplug your decorations and call our professionals.
At Ridge Heating & Air Conditioning, our licensed technicians are experienced in checking and repairing home electrical systems, especially during the holiday season.
After the Season: Store Smart
When it’s all over, don’t just toss the lights in a box and forget them. Proper storage matters, especially here in Florida. This care will extend the life of your decorations and keep them safe to use year after year.
- Store lights in a cool, dry place (avoid basements or damp garages)
- Coil cords loosely (avoid kinks or tight knots)
- Label indoor vs. outdoor use so you know what to pull next year
